Characterization of plastic materials

The acceptance of polymers by the public is associated with quality assurance, which must be based on the knowledge of positive results of reliable long-term tests. This was said by Ronald Peralta, specialist in mechanical characterization of plastics in the Center of Productive Innovation and Technology Transfer (CITEmaterials) of the Pontifical Catholic of Peru (PUCP).

Peralta said that faults in polymer composite objects can probably be avoided by performing appropriate tests, design and quality control. “In other words, the products should have been characterized”, he said.

He also said that the economic and social impact, the damage to the image of the company and the limitation of competitiveness in the import and export market are some of the consequences that are generated when plastics are not characterized.

According to Ronald Peralta, characterization is a broad and general process by which the structure and properties of a material are tested and measured. “Without characterization the scientific understanding of engineering materials could not be determined. This process may involve the testing of the physical properties of a material, or the analysis of the internal structure of the materials”, he said.

On the other hand, the materials engineer of the National University San Agustín indicated that it is important that companies characterize plastics to reverse engineer (adapt and / or improve), for example, to make a bag with barrier properties and make corks based on polymers.

“It is also essential to characterize to improve the product and know if it is good as the imported and that rubber resists abrasion more because I want to sell it in the mining sector. Also, the characterization is vital to perform quality control and choose the best supplier”, he said.

The engineer Peralta was the speaker of the talk called “Characterization of plastic materials”, an event organized by the CITEmaterials of the Pontifical Catholic of Peru (PUCP).
