3D printing as innovation accelerator

Innovation is built on ideas that generate measurable value to the company, and ideas must create revenue for the company, to be considered innovation and not invention, said Andrés Auz Castro, a professor at the Faculty of Design of the Instituto Tecnológico Superior Guayaquil and Technological Art.

He said that manufacturing technologies include cutting, subtractive, forming and additive. "The design process includes the stages of discovering, interpreting, devising, prototyping and evolving," he said.

According to Auz, additive manufacturing is a process of making three-dimensional objects by adding the material. On the uses of this industry, the specialist indicated: "Prototypes and tools, complex designs, models that require interconnected parts".

Among the advantages, said Auz Castro, which offers additive manufacturing are freedom of design, closed systems, rapid production, less waste, low cost of production, real thermoplastics, rapid production and multiple materials (Polyjet).

Polyjet applications include: conceptual models with best aesthetics, translucent and transparent models, prototypes similar to rubber, molds (blowing, injection, thermoforming, liquid silicone) and digital dentistry.

In addition, the specialist said that structures with Polyjet provide better prototypes, maintains confidentiality, non-faithful evaluations, shorter times, less expensive developments and opportunity over the competition.

Andrés Auz was the speaker of the First Business Meeting of Digital Manufacturing "Technology and Innovation in the Plastic Industry", an event held by the Pontifical Catholic University of Peru (PUCP) in cooperation with the Plastics Committee of the National Society of Industries.

Likewise, Midori Sánchez, a mechatronics engineer from the PUCP participated in the event, who gave a demonstration of "Digitalized products with 3D laser scanner".
